Weird Sherborn

"History is the art of making an argument about the past by telling a story accountable to evidence."

                                                              -Jill Lepore

Weird Sherborn is an innovative local "history detectives" program brought to the community by the new Sherborn History Center at the Sherborn Public Library. The SHC is an evolving collaborative project of the Historical Society and the Library, soon to be located in a newly refurbished SPL space.

“Will definitely keep an eye out for future “Weird Sherborn“ events.Your class was really wonderful- interesting and engaging! I will certainly recommend it to my friends :)

I especially loved how you featured Lavina’s story and took the time to read aloud her will. I thought the language was very rich and wonderful exposure for the children who are more accustomed to informal language. I liked how you structured the tour with sharing engaging content first and then allowing free exploration of the cemetery in a relaxed, day-dreamy kind of way:) I also was moved by the inclusion of the story of the African American family who served in the Civil War.

Your story telling in general was superb!”

Weird Sherborn's history coach is Kevin Delaney*, longtime Sherborn guy and veteran history teacher, who believes that through local history, careful observers can trace important macro-trends and developments in our past. It's also just fun!

We hope to offer a number of programs in the coming months, with a particular acknowledgment of Sherborn's 350th birthday in 2024. Each session's objective will be to discover and reveal hidden history stories relating to a range of themes, from life at the Sherborn Women's Reformatory to life on a typical 19th century Sherborn farm.

Sessions will be hands-on, combining field studies with internet research - experience how history is "made" by actually doing it!

We expect to release some of our collective findings for public review.
